The Death Stranding Isolations anime has a new teaser, a named screenwriter and a 2027 premiere on Disney+. Here's what's confirmed.
Kojima Productions revealed the update at its 10th anniversary event at Tokyo's Azabudai Hills Gallery, as Cartoon Brew reported. It's a hand-drawn anime series set in Hideo Kojima's game universe, with an original story and new characters.
Death Stranding Isolations: who's making it
- Executive producer: Hideo Kojima
- Director: Takayuki Sano
- Series composition and screenplay: Tow Ubukata
- Original character designs: Ilya Kuvshinov
- Animation: E&H Production, the studio behind Ninja Kamui and Bullet/Bullet
Ubukata is the new name on that list. Cartoon Brew notes that his novel Mardock Scramble won the Nihon SF Taisho Award in 2003, and that he has written for novels, games, comics and anime.
What the story is about
Japanese outlet Anime Anime! explains the series' central idea like this: in the Death Stranding world, the souls of the dead get stranded, and when they connect with the living, the result is a huge explosion. The first game launched in 2019, and the sequel, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, followed in 2025.
The anime picks up just after Sam Porter Bridges, the games' protagonist, links North America through the Chiral Network. The country is trying to become one again, but those new connections bring fresh disaster.
The synopsis opens with the line "My mom became a crater." Anime Anime! describes the lead as a girl who has cut herself off from everyone, alongside an old sage, a female soldier and an angry boy. Cartoon Brew calls the central character a woman, so the sources differ slightly there. The teaser shows a girl tormented by nightmares and a huge crater, according to Anime Anime!.
Sano said entertainment has the power to "enhance the spirituality of those who consume it", and that he approached the project with a strong sense of duty, per Cartoon Brew.
When can you watch Death Stranding Isolations?
The series is due in 2027, with no exact date yet. Cartoon Brew says it's heading to Disney+. The Japanese announcement, as reported by Anime Anime!, specifies an exclusive on Disney+ "Star". Neither source mentions UK timing yet.
Isolations was first revealed last November, and it isn't the franchise's only animated project. Kojima Productions has also announced the anime feature Death Stranding: Mosquito, directed by Hiroshi Miyamoto at ABC Animation Studio, plus an adult animated feature with Los Angeles-based Line Mileage.
The next thing to watch for is an exact premiere date and confirmation of where it will stream in the UK.
