It's been a very long wait, but the next Elder Scrolls finally has a name: The Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel. Bethesda revealed it at the end of its 40th anniversary video for Bethesda Game Studios on 3 November 2026, and I'm properly excited.

The video itself is a nostalgic trip through the studio's history, and a genuinely interesting one, before Todd Howard calls the anniversary "what a perfect time to tell you what The Elder Scrolls 6 is actually called", as VGC reported.

He also looks ahead to both Fallout and The Elder Scrolls, which hits home if your first Bethesda game was Fallout 3. Mine was, and it swallowed hundreds of hours of my life.

What the Elder Scrolls VI: Sentinel teaser shows

There's no gameplay. TechPowerUp describes a short desert shot in which an Elder Scroll emerges from the dunes, before the new logo appears.

There's also a line of lore text from Yazar, Moth Priest to High Queen Iradne of Hammerfell, dated 4E 206. Skyrim is set in 4E 201, so TechPowerUp reads that as Sentinel taking place around five years later.

Where Sentinel looks to be set

IGN explains that Sentinel is a city on the northwest coast of Hammerfell, beside Iliac Bay. Hammerfell sits southwest of Skyrim and due west of Cyrodiil, the home of Oblivion. (VGC calls Sentinel a region rather than a city, so the sources differ slightly.)

Rock Paper Shotgun says the teaser all but locks in Hammerfell. Bethesda's follow-up post on X, per TechPowerUp, says the studio is pleased the name and location are now public.

VGC adds that former Bethesda designer Bruce Nesmith, lead designer on Skyrim, said last month he hoped the setting theories were right, because it could finally mean boats and exploring the water.

IGN notes that Skyrim is Bethesda's most played game by lifetime players, and it's the one that reshaped how I think about games, which is exactly why I can't wait to see what Howard is cooking up next.

What's still unknown

There's no release date, launch window or confirmed platforms. In that same X post, Bethesda said it will be some time before it can share more.

For context, Eurogamer counted eight years, four months and 23 days between the 2018 title card and the reveal on 3 November, almost exactly 15 years after Skyrim launched.

TechPowerUp adds that Bethesda said in July the game is still its main focus, despite reports that the Xbox layoffs might slow it down. Bloomberg's Jason Schreier has since claimed on Bluesky that it's at least two years away.

If Sentinel really does sit on Iliac Bay, are you hoping for boats too?
