Godzilla Minus Zero has roared into the record books. It sold 590,000 tickets and took ¥910 million on its first day in Japan, the highest opening day ever for a live-action film there, homegrown or foreign, according to Anime News Network. Honestly, this one felt destined for a huge launch.

The figures come from TOHO, and they put the film's first day 201% ahead of Godzilla Minus One's. After how absolutely epic Minus One was, expectations for this follow-up were sky-high, so it's great to see it smashing them.

Godzilla Minus Zero in UK cinemas and IMAX

Good news if you're in the UK: you don't have to wait. Anime Limited is releasing it in cinemas across the UK and Ireland from today, Friday 6 November, shown in Japanese with English subtitles. Its press kit lists IMAX screenings from 3 November and a 15 certificate.

IMAX is the format to look out for. Anime News Network says it's the first Japanese film to meet the standard to be advertised as "filmed for IMAX".

The film opened in Japan on 3 November, which is Godzilla Day there. Takashi Yamazaki is back as director, screenwriter and VFX supervisor, and the story is set in 1949, two years after the events of Minus One.

More Godzilla while you wait for your screening

If you can't get enough of the King of the Monsters, I recently covered LEGO's giant Godzilla set, which is just as big a beast in its own way.

As for the film itself, I'll definitely be watching it myself. Are you seeing it in IMAX, or heading straight to your local cinema this weekend?
